From Podgorica Airport to Budva

Pre-booked transfer — our pick. A private car booked in advance costs €45–70 to Budva, meets you in arrivals with a name board and tracks your flight. Over an hour’s drive the fixed price matters more than at Tivat, and for a late arrival it’s the only option worth considering: the rank thins out at night and you don’t want to be negotiating a €50 fare at 1 a.m. Book it for the day you land with your hotel address and the driver does the rest.

Taxi from the rank. The rank is outside arrivals and the drive to Budva is 60–80 minutes for about €40–60. Agree the total before you get in — the airport taxis quote fixed prices for the coast and there’s a board at the rank to compare against. The route goes through the Sozina tunnel, where there’s a toll the driver pays, and drops down to the sea at Sutomore before turning north to Budva.

Rental car. The desks are in the terminal and the drive to the coast is a good introduction to the country — motorway to the Sozina tunnel, then the coast road. Prices run from about €25 a day off-season to €50–80 in August; book before you fly, as the counters sell out in summer. A car makes most sense if you’re not staying put in Budva.

Coach. There’s no bus at the airport. Take a taxi to Podgorica bus station (€10–15, about 15 minutes), then a coach to Budva — they run roughly every hour through the day, cost €7–8 and take about an hour and a half. Count on 2½–3½ hours door to door and €20–25 in total, and you arrive at Budva’s main bus station. There is a railway halt called Aerodrom about 1.5 km from the terminal, but trains are rare and don’t go to Budva, so it’s not a practical option.

From Budva to Podgorica Airport

For a flight out of Podgorica, book the car the day before: a transfer picks you up at your accommodation at a fixed time for the same €45–70 as the way in, and a taxi ordered through your accommodation is €40–60. Leave Budva two hours before you need to be at the terminal in summer — the Sozina tunnel and the airport road both queue on changeover days.

Returning a rental car is straightforward: the desks are at the terminal, so allow 20 minutes for the drop-off and paperwork. The coach-and-taxi route works in reverse — coach from Budva bus station to Podgorica, then a taxi from the bus station to the airport — but it means leaving Budva three hours before departure, so it only makes sense for a daytime flight and a small bag.

Renting a car at Podgorica Airport

Podgorica has the widest choice of rental counters in the country, around forty between the international names and the local firms. Prices swing with the season — about €25 a day in May or October, €50–80 in August — so book before you fly and read the deposit and insurance terms. From the airport it’s an hour to Budva, and with a car the whole coast, Lovćen and Skadar Lake open up.

Which should you pick?

Podgorica is far enough from Budva that the choice is mostly about money versus time. A transfer or taxi is an hour and change, door to door, for €40–70 — the same as one night in a decent Budva apartment — and the transfer is the one we’d book, because the price is settled before you land. The coach route saves €20–40 a head but costs two extra hours and a change with your luggage. Two or more people almost always come out ahead in a car; a solo traveller on a tight budget with a daytime flight might take the coach.

Podgorica or Tivat?

If you have the choice, Tivat is the airport for Budva: 19 km against Podgorica’s 63, and a 25-minute drive instead of an hour and a bit.
